Since their establishment, the rules and regulations for doping control have been constantly under review to ensure that the Doping Control system is fair and effective. Is it true that an athlete will be sanctioned only if his/her urine (or blood) sample is tested positive?

No.

Although most doping cases are based on a laboratory test of urine (or blood) samples, athletes will also be sanctioned if

  • There is other evidence suggesting that they have used or attempted to use prohibited substances.
  • They refuse to complete the sample collection procedure and/or evade sample collection.
  • They do not provide accurate and up-to-date whereabouts information.
  • They have breached the rules that also apply to non-athletes as specified below.

Do the doping control rules only apply to athletes?

No.

The rules also affect coaches, trainers, officials, medical and paramedical personnel who work with the athletes in preparation of competition. It even applies to any other persons who may not be related to the sports circle.

What are the Anti-Doping Rule Violations that apply to both athletes and other individuals?

  • Tampering or attempted tampering with any part of Doping Control
  • Possession of prohibited substances and/or methods
  • Trafficking or attempted trafficking in any prohibited substance or prohibited method
  • Administration or attempted administration of a prohibited substances or prohibited method to any athletes

Beside laboratory test results, what else can be treated as evidence of anti-doping rule violation?

  • relevant evidence collected by customs and police
  • athletes and sport team members’ assistance in discovering violation

Furthermore, anti-doping authority has the right to store samples for future laboratory analysis.

Are sanctions only limited to suspension from Competition?

No. Other possible sanctions for athletes include:

  • disqualification of results in events during which an anti-doping rule violation occurs (forfeiting of any medals, points and prizes)
  • withdrawal of sport-related financial support or other sport-related benefits

Athlete and athlete support personnel violating anti-doping rules may be put on a ban on participation in any sports events in any capacity whatsoever.
